Jonathan Gray


Jonathan specialises in general commercial litigation, arbitration and employment law.  He has practised law in Hong Kong since his qualification in 2002.

Jonathan’s commercial litigation and arbitration practice extends to shareholder disputes, general commercial disputes and judicial review proceedings. He regularly acts as counsel in arbitrations conducted under various arbitration rules including those of CIETAC, HKIAC, ICC, LCIA, SIAC and UNCITRAL.

He also has significant experience in contentious and non-contentious employment matters and heads the firm’s Employment Practice. He acts for both employers and employees in various matters such as discrimination claims, claims over termination and remuneration, trade secrets and confidential information and enforcement of post-termination restrictions.  He also advises on non-contentious employment matters including the drafting and negotiation of employment contracts, handbooks and policies, personal data privacy issues and transfers of employment.   

Jonathan has been recognised in legal directories such as Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific for his work, with client feedback noting him as: “Diligent, responsive, good legal knowledge and knowledge of HKIAC proceedings,” and “Incredible. Jonathan exceeded excellent in all areas and I would highly recommend to anyone.”

Jonathan read Ancient and Medieval History and Latin at Durham University and obtained his Law degree from Manchester Metropolitan University (taught via Hong Kong University’s School of Professional and Continuing Education). Jonathan studied Chinese at both Harbin Institute of Technology and the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. He speaks English and proficient Mandarin. 

In addition to Hong Kong Jonathan is admitted as a solicitor in England & Wales.

Before joining the firm, Jonathan trained in Hong Kong at Simmons & Simmons and after qualification worked there as an associate for nearly seven years before joining Tanner De Witt Solicitors, a leading Hong Kong firm, first as senior associate then as partner.  While at Simmons & Simmons Jonathan spent 12 months on secondment at Shin & Kim, a leading South Korean law firm.
